Key Takeaways
|
Maryland businesses that meet the state's retirement plan requirements may qualify for a waiver of their $300 State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT) Annual Report filing fee for 2027.
The waiver has been available since the 2023 filing season. Businesses that offer qualifying retirement plans outside MarylandSaves must submit a new certification each year to continue receiving the benefit.
Act before December 31
Businesses that offer employees a qualifying retirement plan outside MarylandSaves must submit the annual fee waiver certification through MarylandSaves by December 31, 2026, to qualify for the 2027 filing fee waiver.
Businesses that actively participate in MarylandSaves and make qualifying payroll contributions do not need to complete the separate certification form. MarylandSaves provides their qualification information directly to SDAT.
To qualify, businesses must meet MarylandSaves' eligibility requirements, including having employees, maintaining a qualifying retirement plan with the required contribution activity during 2026, and being in good standing with SDAT. The waiver eliminates the applicable Annual Report filing fee but does not eliminate the requirement to file the Annual Report.
Review the requirements and submit the certification, if applicable, through the MarylandSaves waiver application page before December 31, 2026.
Make it part of your year-end checklist
For businesses with qualifying retirement plans outside MarylandSaves, an annual review can help ensure the required certification is completed before December 31.
